Marrakech or “Amour n’yakouch” in Berber
tongue means the land of God gave its name to Morocco for more than two
centuries. The city of palms or the red city, as Moroccans call it, takes its name
for the natural red ochre pigment that bedecks its walls and buildings can at
time seem dominant. Marrakech is like all Moroccan cities, it's a town of two
halves: the ancient walled Medina, and the colonial Ville
Nouvelle. Marrakech is the first tourist destination in Morocco, it has
always been something of marketplace where tribesmen and Berber villagers bring
their goods, spend their money and find entertainment.
