Hassan II Mosque
The only mosque in the Islamic world that open to the non-Muslims, the Mosque of Hassan the 2nd is Casablanca’s most obvious sight, raised on a rocky platform reclaimed from the ocean. The mosque can accommodate 25,000 worshippers within at the prayer hall and more than 80,000 outside in the courtyard. The Hassan II mosque is the the 3rd largest religious building in the world after the mosque In Mecca and Madina. The complex was designed by the French Michel Pinseau, 35,000 craftsmen worked on it, and it was inaugurated on August 1993. The facts of the mosque’s construction are almost as startling as its size. With carved stucco, zellige tilework, a painted cedar ceiling and marble, onyx and travertine cladding, it is a monument to Moroccan architectural virtuosity and craftsmanship.
