Erfoud or “Ar’afoud” that means « Up to the knee » in Berber
tongue because when it rains or the valley floods the water come up to the
level of the knee. Here you can marvel at the million-year-old fossils and
marble industry that the area is famous for. This peaceful town, with an
extensive palm groves and before its development began in 1930, the French had
set up a military post here to watch over the Tafilalt valley, the Berber
tribes put up a long and tough drawn out resistance to the establishment of
French rule, and valley was one of the last parts of the southern Morocco to
surrender. The area also is known of its overflows with dates of every variety.
Here also where the three-day Date Festival takes place at the end of date
harvest in early October.
