The UNSECO world protected heritage ksar is 190km from Marrakech and
only 34km from Ourazazate. It was once the point of interchange between the caravans
coming from the desert and Marrakech. Ait Benhaddou is not really the place to
catch a glimpse of fading ksar life, but it is one of the most spectacular
sights of the Atlas, pilled upon a low hillock above a shallow, reed-strewn
river that usually dry, except in winter and spring. The picturesque village
has often been used as a film location. Lawrence of Arabia, Sodom and Gomorrah,
Jesus of Nazareth and many others were all filmed here.
